Design Process
What design styles are available in your system?
On the residential generator at /generate, presets are organized by area:
- Front yard — 15 styles: Modern Minimalist, American Traditional, English Garden, Mediterranean, Japanese Zen, French Formal, Nordic Minimalist, Tropical Resort, Natural Wild, Southwest Desert, plus Coastal Casual, Cottage & Rustic, American Farmhouse, Contemporary, and Low-Maintenance Curb Appeal.
- Pool & spa — 10 styles: Modern Geometric, Natural Lagoon, Infinity Edge, Classic Traditional, Compact Plunge Pool, Spa & Hot Tub Retreat, Family Pool & Shallow Shelf, Resort Pool & Waterfall, Lap & Fitness Pool, and Pool + Outdoor Living.
- Backyard — 15 functions (relaxation, dining, fire pit, pet-friendly, and more).
- Patio — 11 layouts; garden — 14 goals; side yard — 6 styles.
Each preset is tuned for visibly different AI results. Add optional elements and a Location for climate-appropriate planting; Best quality adds a DIY planning list.
How does the climate adaptation system work?
Our climate adaptation system is what truly sets our platform apart. When you upload your yard photo, our AI analyzes your location's climate data including:
- Precipitation patterns and annual rainfall
- Temperature ranges and frost dates
- Growing zones and native plant ecosystems
- Soil types common in your region
- Sunlight patterns and seasonal variations
Based on this analysis, the system adjusts plant selections and landscape elements to ensure they're appropriate for your specific climate. This creates designs that are not only beautiful but also sustainable, requiring less maintenance and resources while having a higher implementation success rate.
How do you know my location and climate?
When you open our AI Yard Design tool, we softly estimate your location from your connection so we can suggest designs that fit your local climate. You will see this as a Location field on the generator page, and you can edit or replace it at any time (for example, if you are designing for a different property).
The AI only uses this location text to choose climate-appropriate plants and materials in the image—it does not try to identify you as a person. For implementation, we still recommend confirming specific plant species with local nurseries or professionals, especially in areas with strong microclimate differences.
What is the step-by-step design process?
Our design process follows these steps:
- Upload photo: A clear yard, patio, or pool photo (or try a sample image).
- Choose area & preset: Pick your area type and a style or function; add optional landscape elements.
- Add location (recommended): City or region for climate-fit plants and DIY list language.
- Generate: Choose Quick preview or Best quality (2K/4K for sharper sheet text).
- Fine-tune: Regenerate with another preset or edit with a short text instruction.
- Download & share: Full-size view, download, or share your result.
Most runs finish in about one to two minutes.
How accurate are the plant recommendations?
Our plant recommendations are based on extensive horticultural databases and regional growing guides. The system considers your climate zone, soil conditions likely present in your region, and the specific requirements of each plant species. Premium users receive detailed plant lists that include:
- Common and botanical names
- Growth habits and mature sizes
- Water and sunlight requirements
- Seasonal characteristics
- Native alternatives when available
While our recommendations are scientifically sound, we always suggest consulting with local nurseries for final plant selections, as microclimate variations can affect plant performance.
Technical
What technology powers the AI design system?
Our platform utilizes several advanced AI technologies working in concert:
- Computer Vision: Analyzes your existing yard, identifying features like structures, trees, and hardscaping
- Generative AI: Creates new design visualizations based on professional design principles
- Machine Learning: Continually improves results based on expert feedback and successful implementations
- Style Transfer: Applies specific design aesthetics while maintaining physical constraints of your space
- Climate Data Integration: Incorporates regional climate information to ensure appropriate plant selection
These technologies work together to create designs that are both visually stunning and practically implementable.
How do I choose styles and options on the generator?
On the residential generator you pick an area type (front yard, backyard, patio, garden, side yard, or pool & spa), then a style or function preset from the cards. Optional landscape elements (plants, pergolas, fire features, and more) and Additional requirements text refine the result. Focused pages such as /generate/front-yard show inline presets for that area. Your home and hardscape are preserved where possible—the AI redesigns the landscape around them.
What are the optimal photo requirements?
For optimal results, we recommend the following:
- Resolution: Minimum 1920x1080px, higher is better
- Format: JPEG or PNG (JPG preferred)
- Lighting: Even, natural daylight without harsh shadows
- Angle: Eye-level or slightly elevated perspective
- Coverage: Wide view capturing the entire area to be designed
- Clarity: Sharp focus without blur or excessive motion
Our system can process photos that don't meet all these criteria, but following these guidelines will result in more accurate and detailed design visualizations.
How is my data protected?
We implement comprehensive data protection measures:
- All uploaded images are stored with end-to-end encryption
- Your designs are only accessible to your account
- We process design data on secure, isolated servers
- Location data is used only for climate adaptation and never shared
- You can delete all your data permanently at any time
- We maintain strict access controls and security protocols
We never sell your personal information or design data to third parties and comply with global data protection regulations.
Using Your Design
How can I implement my AI design in real life?
Our designs are created with practical implementation in mind. Here are ways to bring your design to life:
- DIY Approach: Use the DIY planning list and material notes as a shopping guide
- Professional Implementation: Share your design with landscapers who can translate the visual concept into reality
- Phased Implementation: Break down the design into manageable sections to complete over time
- Material Substitution: Use our material recommendations as a starting point, but feel free to substitute with locally available alternatives
Premium users receive implementation guides with suggested order of operations and practical considerations for each design element.
How accurate are the material and hardscaping recommendations?
Our hardscaping and material recommendations are based on professional landscape architecture principles and regional availability. Each design includes specifications for:
- Paving materials with texture and color suggestions
- Wall and border elements with construction considerations
- Decking and structural materials appropriate for your climate
- Decorative elements that complement the overall design style
- Lighting recommendations to enhance the space
While our AI generates visually accurate representations, specific engineering requirements for structures like retaining walls or water features should be reviewed by qualified professionals before construction.
Can I modify my design after generation?
Absolutely! Our platform offers several ways to refine your design:
- Style variations: Regenerate with a different area preset
- Optional elements: Add plants, hardscape, pergolas, fire features, and more before generating
- Fine-tune text: After a result, describe changes in plain language and regenerate
- Quality & resolution: Switch between Quick preview and Best quality, or try 2K/4K for a sharper DIY sheet
Experimenting with multiple presets usually takes only one to two minutes per run.
How do I account for my specific site conditions?
Our platform allows you to indicate specific site conditions that influence design:
- Slope and Elevation: Tag areas with significant grade changes
- Shade Patterns: Mark areas with full sun, partial shade, or full shade
- Soil Conditions: Indicate known soil issues (clay, sandy, etc.)
- Drainage Concerns: Highlight areas with poor drainage
- Existing Features: Mark elements that must remain (utilities, large trees)
Premium users can access our detailed site analysis tool that helps identify potential challenges and opportunities specific to your property, ensuring designs work harmoniously with your unique conditions.
